Citizen Rec.

Hospitality Design and Brand Experience

Turning a growing restaurant brand into an experience that can scale.

Role: Hospitality + Experience Design Consultant
Location: New York City + Texas (2020, 2022, 2026)

MULTI-MARKET ROLLOUT · REPEAT ENGAGEMENT · BRAND + EXPERIENCE SYSTEM

The Business Problem

I first worked with Citizen designing its Citizens All Day restaurants in SoHo and on Bleecker Street.

As the company expanded into Texas, the concept itself was evolving—from an Australian brunch café into Citizen Rec, bridging brunch with the energy and social life of an Australian gastropub.

That created a bigger challenge:

How do you evolve the brand across multiple locations without creating disconnected experiences—or making every restaurant feel identical?

Building the Brand in Real Life

Working directly with the founders, my role expanded from interior design into the broader guest and brand experience.

I helped translate Citizen Rec across multiple layers:

Space
Interior design · entry moments · host stands · environmental details

Brand Touchpoints
Coasters · uniforms · plates · cups · serveware · matchboxes · signage · brand symbol

Culture + Participation
Art wall · Foster's Fridge · Split the G Bell · Pub Rules

Each piece works at a different scale, but together they create a recognizable physical language for the brand.

Designing for Scale

The goal wasn't to create a rigid restaurant template.

It was to establish repeatable principles, objects and behaviors that could travel from location to location while leaving room for each restaurant to respond to its neighborhood and architecture.

That approach reduces the need to reinvent the brand every time Citizen grows while protecting the personality that makes the experience distinctive.

The work is now extending beyond the physical environment as we explore service moments and guest rituals that can make Citizen Rec behave as distinctly as it looks.

Evidence of Trust

My role with Citizen has expanded alongside the company:

Interior Designer → Repeat Collaborator → Hospitality + Experience Design Consultant

What began with two New York interiors evolved into a broader role shaping how the brand is experienced across markets.

Hospitality & Guest Experience

I help growing hospitality brands turn positioning into scalable spaces, interactions and rituals people actually experience.
